Some couples want an elaborate showpiece with several tiers, while others prefer a sleek and simpler look. Either way, they need a baker or bakery that can handle their demand and help bring their vision to life -- and of course, it has to taste delicious. These businesses represent some of the best wedding cake creators from coast to coast.

Alabama – Magnificent Cakes


Hilde McGhee has been making cakes in all shapes and sizes for over 30 years. She customizes her creations according to what the couple is looking for, including fancy fondants or a simple buttercream. These days she sees requests trending more towards buttercream, but most brides pick different flavors for each of their tiers with Red Velvet being the most popular – it is the south after all.

Alaska – Alaska Cake Studio


There’s a flavor for everyone at this Anchorage cake spot. From their signature champagne cake to the 90-year-old recipe for carrot cake, they’ve got it all. All cakes are made from scratch, often with beautiful whipped buttercream and fresh flowers.

Arizona – Piece of Cake


This Arizona cake bakery whips up some of the most delicious cakes in the desert, and some of the prettiest around. Their versatility ranges from imaginative designs like Super Mario or Beauty and the Beast, to classic whipped buttercream with fresh flowers. Little Rock

Natalie Madison took her love for cakes and fashion and filled a need in Little Rock with a highly detailed cake shop. Although her time is split between making cakes and teaching others how to decorate, she is known for both her painted cakes and those that are smothered in flowers, both sugar and real.

California – Sweet & Saucy Shop

Long Beach

This Long Beach bakery creates cakes for every sort of bride with themes ranging from Hollywood glam to simple and elegant. Flavors follow suit with classics like vanilla cake with chocolate mousse and fresh berries, or more creative creations like the chocolate cake with toasted marshmallow filling, chocolate ganache filling and vanilla graham cracker buttercream.

Colorado – Azucar Bakery


This bakery is all about making people happy through cake – a point driven home by their tagline, “less hate, more cake.” There’s something for everyone here, from fondant cakes studded with pearls to buttercream rosettes or hand-painted designs. There are over two dozen cake flavors to choose from, including their decadent dark chocolate chip cake with ganache filling.

Connecticut – Lovely Cakes


This east coast bakery serves Connecticut and New York with their gorgeous cakes. Owner and artist Renata Papadopoulos was on the path to becoming a pilot before switching gears and entering the artistic world of cake decorating. This Cake Wars winner now whips-up meticulously designed buttercream and fondant cakes that come in many different flavors. A bakery signature is the salted caramel buttercream – the perfect hint of sweet and salty.

Delaware – Carolina Sugar Fairy


Don’t look in a retail store for this wedding cake designer. Carolina Sugar Fairy Owner Jen Rineer focuses all of her attention on highly artistic and delicious custom wedding and groom’s cakes. She specializes in sugar flowers. Expect classic flavors and some out-of-the-ordinary tastes like Tipsy Fairy (a hint of mocha and bourbon), graham cracker and hot apple cider. The filling choices are endless, and you can even add a bit of crunch with cookie dough or candy bars.

Florida – dbakers Sweet Studio


This family run bakery is truly known for their over the top creations with adventurous flavors like raspberry pistachio, Nutella vanilla, Guava and cream cheese. They can also produce gorgeous vegan and gluten free cakes. Expect designs that include really cool textures and colors that make these cakes true masterpieces almost too good to eat… almost.

Georgia – Baker’s Man


Expect super personalized service at this Atlanta spot – chef and owner Mark Brickman meets with every couple to design their dream cake. These delicious cakes pack a lot of flavor in each tier with three layers of cake and two layers of filling. The added space means room for cool flavor combinations like a white chocolate and strawberry marble cake with lemon curd buttercream and raspberry marmalade fillings. The design choices are endless but popular selections have included semi-naked and rustic styles, and adding personal touches, like your favorite pet, into the design of the cake.

Hawaii – A Cake Life


Your wish is their command at this Honolulu-based bakery that creates cakes that are dripping in gold and cascading with sugar flowers. The classic Lilikoi is a favorite, highlighting the flavors of Oahu with a yellow butter cake that is brimming with passion fruit (lilikoi) puree and mixed with fruits like guava.

Idaho – Amaru Confections


Their team may be small, but they are certainly mighty, churning out some of the most gorgeous and delicious cakes enjoyed by those within 250 miles of Boise. Their cakes come in tons of different flavors – vanilla bean, maple bacon, coconut cream, etc. – and customers equally love their gluten-free options that go well beyond just chocolate and vanilla. Their designs are usually inspired by their customers desires and stand as true pieces of edible artwork when they are finished.

Indiana – Cake Bake Shop


Walk into this Indianapolis bakery and you might just feel like you entered into a fairytale. Precisely the point of Gwendolyn Rogers’ whimsical shop. She’s created many show-stopping wedding cakes for celebrities and everyday customers. Classic buttercream envelops deliciously moist cake made with only the crème de la crème of ingredients in beautiful, timeless designs.

Illinois – Bittersweet Pastry Shop


For over 25 years this Chicago bakery has been serving up intricately designed fondant and buttercream cakes. Their style reflects that of the couple, creating everything from Ombre buttercream to cascading sugar flowers and pressed gold leaf. On the inside you’ll find just as well thought out choices for the cake with flavors like almond strawberry brûlée, an almond butter cake with one layer of strawberry preserves and one of vanilla bean crème brûlée custard.

Iowa – Le Cake Design Studio


This Iowa shop is known for its fondant cakes but doesn’t shy away from buttercream by request. Cake designs run the gamut from simply elegance to more intricate, artistic designs. As for flavors, owner Robin curates a small but delicious list with Vanilla Almond being a bride favorite.

Kansas – 3 Women and an Oven

Overland Park

No two cakes are alike at this Kansas bakery known for their custom design. Of course, they are happy to give inspiration like a cake with metallic rose gold accents or an over-the-top cream and taupe number with piping detail, sugar flowers and flowing ruffles. Lots of rich flavor choices are available, like Italian wedding, a coconut butter cake with pecans and cream cheese icing or pink champagne made with almost an entire bottle of bubbly.

Kentucky – The Mischief Maker


There’s no mischief here, the team is a true band of artists. They create one-of-a-kind designs (that are retired after the wedding they appear at!) and only take on two clients per month to insure they can spend the proper amount of time creating a couple’s dream cake. Their specialty is highly realistic sugar flowers, so realistic that sometimes it’s hard to tell they aren’t real! If you are looking for custom flavors too, they can handle whipping-up anything from green tea with yuzu and vanilla bean to bourbon and ginger.

Louisiana – Bittersweet Confections

New Orleans

Cheryl Scripter started as a chocolatier and, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, was able to grow into a full-fledged bakery and café in New Orleans. Today they create a dazzling dessert arrays, including fondant with pearls, buttercream rosettes, piped designs and more. Their standard wedding cake flavor is white cake infused with almond and filled with almond buttercream.

Maine – Bear Brook Bakery

New Gloucester

This home-based bakery takes on limited orders, so owner and designer Melissa Estes can create grand masterpieces for each of her clients. She is open to everything from elaborate cakes to novelty sculpted creations. Flavor doesn’t fall to the wayside – she uses high-quality ingredients and makes her fondant, ganache and buttercream all from scratch. The detailing and texture on her cakes are truly impeccable.

Massachusetts – Jenny’s Wedding Cakes


This appointment-only wedding cake baker makes Boston proud. She puts care into each cake she creates and pulls inspiration from things that are special to her clients, like the pattern on the bride’s dress. Her designs vary from naked cakes to fully adorned. A favorite is her signature banana cake with caramel buttercream, vanilla custard, homemade pecan pralines and freshly sliced bananas, of course.

Maryland – Charm City Cakes


Duff Goldman’s detailed creations and TV notoriety put his bakery Charm City Cakes on the map. His cake bakers still maintain the same level of detail in everything they do. For weddings they can whip-up a custom cake or choose something from their collection full of modern, intricately designed cakes. Just because these are masterpieces doesn’t mean they don’t taste amazing. Their flavors are equally fun and detailed like Mexican hot chocolate, a chocolate cake layered with cinnamon and chili-infused dark chocolate ganache.

Michigan – Sweet Heather Anne

Ann Arbor

Once you see these cakes you won’t be surprised to learn that the owner, Heather, was an art student. Her designs are intricate, highlighting the smallest of details and incorporating textures and colors in such a special way. Their flavors are just as special, utilizing local ingredients whenever possible. Favorite flavors include Raspberry Rose, a vanilla cake layered with raspberry curd and raspberry rose buttercream.

Minnesota – Miss Sara’s Cakery


Their tagline is “your imagination is our inspiration” and they certainly live up to that. The cakery's designs are some of the most creative around, crafting cakes that appease everyone from superhero lovers to avid travelers and brides looking to have the pattern of their dress inspire their cake! They have over a dozen cake flavors, including red velvet and cookies n’ cream, and non-traditional cake enthusiasts will love their puffed rice treat cakes with marshmallow cream that they can mold and decorate for a fun twist.

Mississippi – Twelve Five Cakery


This appointment-only cake studio whips-up cookies, chocolates and decadent cakes. Their cakes have impeccable detailing, from edible moss to candy geodes and sugar flowers. Harry Potter lovers will gush over the Butterbeer-inspired cake flavor with butterscotch, buttercream and ganache.

Missouri – La Patisserie Chouquette

St. Louis

At this St. Louis bakery, creating wedding cakes is like telling a story. The couple works closely with co-owner and decorator Simone Faure to create the perfect tale with details like ornate jewels and lace in classic flavors that include chocolate, lemon and coconut.

Montana – Bluebird Sweets


What started as a best-cake-in-the-workplace contest for Andrea Vacek turned into a career of cake making. She now creates cakes in Billings with beautiful details like gold drippings, birch texturing or realistic looking sugar flowers. There are tons of options available for those who want to create the flavor profile of your dreams.

Nebraska – Grainolia


Don’t expect any artificial flavors, colors or preservatives here – these cakes are all natural. Designs are generally simple with lots of texture and added dimension where possible. Flavors range from untraditional tastes like guava or butternut squash to tried-and-true combinations like banana and chocolate.

Nevada – Freed's

Las Vegas

This third-generation, family owned bakery has been serving up gorgeous cakes to Las Vegas since 1959. They’re known for their over-the-top creations (you may have seen them on Food Network) but they don’t shy away from delicate designs if requested.

New Hampshire – Jacques Pastry Shop


This highly lauded New England pastry shop has a wide breadth in the type of cakes they craft, ranging from classic to funky and in-between. But don’t expect just a pretty design, their cakes are filled with high-quality ingredients like Swiss preserves in Raspberry or Apricot, chocolate truffle or a variety of buttercreams – including a few spiked options.

New Jersey – Sweet T’s


Two sisters, Toni Moshen and Chrissy Dalton, collaborated together to open this New Jersey pastry shop. All of the cakes are hand-painted by Toni, who has a BFA in illustration and graphic design. The duo are always up for trying new designs and are known for their handcrafted cake toppers.

New Mexico – Bizzy B Cakes


Although 3D sculpted cakes are often what they are known for, the team at Bizzy B Cakes is willing to whip-up a custom cake for even the most traditional bride. The same goes for the inside of the cake – they can appease dairy free, paleo or gluten free diets. Flavors don’t lack variety with options like Cloud Nine, a white cake infused with orange and berry sauce with a whipped cream filling and fresh berries.

New York – Cake Power

New York

From art director to baker, it’s clear that Kate Sullivan hasn’t lost any of her artistic vision just because she makes cakes. Her designs are true masterpieces ranging from art deco to whimsical. She whips-up equally masterful flavors dependent on her clients loves. A favorite? Spiked Mexican hot chocolate cake with a whipped marshmallow buttercream.

North Carolina – One Belle Bakery


There isn’t an order too tall for this bakery that serves the entire Carolinas – they have even created 8-tier cakes. Textured, patterned, gold dusted, flower filled – they’ll do it all. They have fun with the flavors too, with cute names like Be My Clementine, an Orange-Creamsicle Cake with Mandarin Orange Custard, or Lord Have Mercy, a chocolate-chocolate chip cake with chocolate fudge.

North Dakota – Farmer's Wife


This bakery brings some big city flair with small town charm. They create specialty cakes of all kinds from sculpted to 3D, and even cupcakes. All of their cakes come from time-honored recipes with favorite flavors like a signature white almond and white chocolate raspberry.

Ohio – Wild Flour Bakery

Rocky River

If chocolate hazelnut cake with chocolate ganache or banana cake with chocolate peanut butter sounds up your alley, this Ohio bakery may just suit you. Their designs are stunners – gold sparkles, stained glass designs and dripping pearls – and guests will line up to snap photos before you cut the cake.

Oklahoma – Madison's on Main


Personal service is what you’ll find here – each couple works exclusively with the owner, Donna Munson, who also designs and bakes the cakes. Her made-from-scratch flavors include German chocolate and strawberry with yummy fillings like whipped lemon curd and cheesecake mousse.

Oregon – Dream Cakes


This woman-owned bakery is all about the perfect ingredients – local butter, chocolates from France and Belgium and fresh fruit from local markets. Flavor combinations are equally enticing, including white cake with home-made lemon curd and fresh berries, and coconut butter cake with creamy coconut custard and fresh berry filling.

Pennsylvania – Cake Life Bake Shop


These best friends competed a few times on Cupcake Wars before deciding that they should open a bakery. They create unique cakes based on what their customers desire, ranging from marbled fondant to Ombre scalloped buttercream. Signature flavors include honey lavender and tiramisu.

Puerto Rico – Love at First Bite

Founded by a chemistry teacher that left for the love of baking, this Puerto Rico bakeshop serves luxurious wedding cakes specializing in vegan treats! That doesn’t mean they lack flavor – this shop is big on using flavors of the island, so expect tangy passion fruit jelly, guava and coconut.

Rhode Island – Scrumptions

East Greenwich

This made-from-scratch pastry shop creates cakes that run the gamut from ocean inspired designs to vintage and rustic. Equally important is the taste with many options to choose from, including chocolate, carrot, almond and a whole slew of fillings like S’mores, champagne mousse, salted caramel and so much more. Those who have dietary restrictions (including gluten, egg or dairy free, vegan) can rest assured there are options for them too.

South Carolina – Ashley Bakery


This Charleston bakery serves up some of the prettiest cakes in the South with creamy buttercream or smooth fondant often dotted with fresh flowers, greens or even succulents. Flavors include tastes of the south like hummingbird with bananas, pineapples and pecans (often paired with cream cheese frosting), and sour cream pound cake.

South Dakota – Designer Cakes

Rapid City

Rapid City self-taught baker and designer Amy Arcenaux didn’t receive any formal training until July 2018 when she spent some time in Buffalo, New York. She’s combined both of her innate skills and professional lessons to create a variety of cakes with styles ranging from sculpted to gravity defying and everything in between. She creates classics with hand-painted, delicate designs. Popular flavors include white almond sour cream cake paired with vanilla almond buttercream, or chocolate cake with a decadent salted caramel buttercream.

Tennessee – La Crème Wedding Cakes


Elizabeth Meyers loved making cakes from the young age of 13 when she got her first cake decorating set and never turned back. She now works out of an appointment-only studio attached to her home where she designs elegant cakes for the couples she works with. And although she may be a perfectionist in design, the flavors don’t take a backseat with awesome combinations like turtle, a dark chocolate cake filled with caramel buttercream and toasted pecans.

Texas – Sweet Treets Bakery


Move over fondant, most of the cakes at this Austin bakery are covered with fresh buttercream that is sometimes so perfect it looks like fondant! Naked cakes are popular, and so are the classic white, swirled buttercream cakes with fresh flowers. Flavors are a little wilder like mimosa, a champagne cake with orange juice, zest and filled with buttercream.

Utah – Carrie’s Cakes


This appointment-only cake bakery puts care into all of the cakes they make. Whether it’s recreating a beloved Pinterest photo or whipping up something totally new, they’ve got you covered. The team makes their own fondant in-house, which they always layer over buttercream. Flavors run the gamut but their most popular is bourbon vanilla bean followed by raspberry swirl.

Vermont – Vermont Sweet Tooth


Owner Marion Peer didn’t set out to be a baker. As a graduate of Parson’s, she started off in the world of couture fashion but found that she was equally as excited to share recipes as she was with designs. When looking for a new creative outlet after moving from NYC to Vermont, Marion started baking and the rest is history. You’ll now find exquisite wedding cakes with hand-sculpted sugar paste flowers, foliage and even pets. Favorite flavors include chocolate chunk, lemony snicket and bourbon vanilla bean.

Virginia – Incredible Edibles Bakery

Virginia Beach

With locations in Virginia Beach and Richmond, this bakery makes sure that the state is covered when it comes to delicious cakes. They create beautiful, sophisticated cakes with touches of flowers, pops of color and fun toppers. Flavors like almond pound cake with key lime filling and carrot with buttercream keep the inside interesting and delicious.

Washington – Baked


This Seattle bakery doesn’t shy away from over-the-top designs and has won Cake Wars twice. All of their flowers and decorations are handmade with custom colors that align with the vision of their couples. The cake uses local ingredients whenever possible to create flavors like Tequila lime, a lime cake with tequila syrup, lime curd and salted lime crème.

Washington, D.C. – Buttercream Bakeshop

Decadent cakes come out of this high-end D.C. bakery that whips up two to 10 tier masterpieces for some of D.C.’s elite clientele. Pastry pro Tiffany MacIsaac takes inspiration from her native home of Hawaii and creates cascading 3D flowers, Ombre creations and hand-painted masterpieces that are sure to win over any bride.

West Virginia – Spring Hill Pastry Shop


This local family business has been making wedding cakes in Charleston, West Virginia for over 70 years while still using their original recipes. Their buttercream creations are often adorned with sugar or fresh flowers. White cake is a favorite among couples, although they can also choose from flavors like almond, cherry chip, marble and coconut.

Wyoming – Jackson Cake Co.

Jackson Hole

When she isn’t serving as Wyoming’s only female Army MEDEVAC pilot, Lauren Gurney can be found whipping-up gorgeous cakes with partner Monica by her side. The duo specializes in buttercream cakes that follow European standards and include organic and sustainable ingredients whenever possible. Some flavors run seasonal and include donut cakes filled with cinnamon buttercream, and almond chai spiced crème fraiche cake with lavender scented huckleberry buttercream.

Wisconsin – Meringue Bakery

La Crosse

Jen Barney may have a shop out of La Crosse, but she’s worked around the country. Now the Le Cordon Bleu grad wows Wisconsin with her exquisite wedding cakes decorated with beautifully piped lace, realistic sugar flowers and buttercream ruffles. Flavors are just as delectable and creative, like their Food Network winning chocolate cherry balsamic and the citrus forward orange poppy seed cake with Grand Marnier.
