If wearing a face mask is causing breakouts, you’re not alone. In fact, blemishes caused by masks even have their own name now – maskne. If your normal skincare routine is no match for maskne, then TLC’s very own Dr. Pimple Popper has a hack for you.

Dr. Sandra Lee shared a TikTok where she offered tips for preventing maskne and it’s so simple.

Lee suggested starting with a salicylic acid body spray, like the one she makes for her brand SLMD Skincare, and advised users to “spray it on inside the mask” and then fan the mask a little to help it dry.

“Salicylic acid cleans out the oil and debris within your pores, preventing acne,” Dr. Lee said.

More tips Lee shared to help treat and prevent maskne include:

Wear Cloth Face Masks

“Cotton is both comfortable and breathable, minimizing irritation for the skin. Make sure the mask is tight enough to avoid constant adjustments and sits close enough to the skin to create a skin-to-mask seal,” Lee advised.

Hydrate Your Skin Before Putting on Your Mask

“With a mask rubbing against your skin, your skin barrier needs to remain balanced and healthy.”

Skip the Makeup

Besides preventing the spread of COVID-19, masks are also great because you can skip wearing a full face of makeup. This will also help prevent future breakouts and avoid irritating current blemishes.

Don’t Skip SPF

“UV rays can still damage your skin through your clothes and, yes—your mask."

Cleanse Your Skin Before and After Wearing a Mask

“You’ve gotten into a hand-washing routine, but now it’s time for your face to get in on the action. Make sure you’re cleansing your skin right before you put your mask on and right after you take it off.”
