Grief to Hope With Nikki Pennington

For Nikki Pennington, anxiety has always been a part of her life, she cannot recall life without it. For those who suffer from anxiety, it feels overwhelming, like you can't escape it, your thoughts consume you and can, at times paralyze you from doing anything else. It's a vicious cycle that exists in your own mind. Sometimes there is a person in your life who can get you through it and knows exactly what to do and say, for Nikki this was always her mom. Nikki writes "She knew just what to say, how to say it and the right moment to say it to help bring me back to reality. Her words and comfort were always stronger than my anxiety."

It was a few weeks into their marriage and Nikki started to have an anxiety attack, she went to call her mom, but her husband asked if he could try talking with her to see if he could help her navigate. Nikki let him in and it felt like she was talking to her mom. Then he shared a story about Nikki's mom, on their wedding day Nikki's mom gave him a note, that was just between the two of them, on how to "become Nikki's person." It was a step-by-step guide for navigating her anxiety, listing the following:

"Step 1: Just listen
Step 2: Listen a little more
Step 3: Don't try and solve the problem
Step 4: Tell her you understand
Step 5: Keep listening until she's sorted it out on her own. She will, she always does. She doesn't know it yet, but she's had it figured out on her own all along."

Nikki goes on to say that her mom didn't want to give up being her person, but she wanted someone to always be there to be her person, and this is what she did by giving Nikki's husband the note on their wedding day.

Nikki closes her post saying, "Well mom, you will forever be my person."
