Women Start Turning into Their Mothers at 33 Years Old, Study Says
“See, I told you,” said mothers everywhere.
You spent your teenage years rolling your eyes at her and now that you're older, you are the one calling your mom multiple times a day. Even though you said it wouldn’t happen, you have officially morphed into you mother. Don’t feel bad, though. According to science, it’s happening to all of us around the same time.
According to a new study out of the United Kingdom, we make the change toward becoming our mother around the ripe old age of 33. So, if you open the door, yell at your kids and it sounds like your mom’s voice just came out of your mouth — congrats, you are officially your mom.
"We all turn into our parents at some point in our lives – and that is something to be celebrated," said Dr. Julian De Silva, who led the study. "Becoming parents is the main trigger and lifestyle factors are also important."
For the study, De Silva surveyed over 2,000 people and asked participants when they began to feel and act more like their parents. From using the same old sayings, beginning to like the same things and even consuming the same types of media, De Silva found that 52 percent of women said they started acting like their mom between the ages of 30 and 35 years-old. However, 26 percent said they recognized the similarities between their mother and themselves around 35 to 40 years-old, and only 10 percent say it was much later, around 40 to 50. For men, they admitting to becoming their fathers around 34 years-old.
So why does this change happen for so many of us around age 33? De Silva believes it has a lot to do with us becoming moms and evaluating our priorities or morals that were inspired by our own parents. Maybe this is when we find ourselves in situations with our own kids that made our parents seem a bit nutty, and we are finally able to realize: Oh, that’s why my mom was always so tired and often seemed frustrated with us.
Now, go call your mother and apologize. Maybe offer to take her to lunch and reconsider that snazzy and sensible coat she offered to pick up on sale for you.
