Essential oils have become increasingly popular because of their versatility and abundance of health benefits. They are known to help with stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression and a whole load of other common issues. Many people don't realize that scent is an extremely powerful sense that we have. When we smell something, it activates the hypothalamus which controls major systems in our body, including our hormone system. Whether you are diffusing, applying topically or mixing with other products, essential oils should be a part of your daily routine. Because there are so many different kinds of oils and different methods for using them, it can be quite overwhelming when trying to make the purchase. But have no fear! We are have created a beginner's guide to essential oils to tell you the best oils to fit your daily needs.

Stress

Lavender essential oil is a great way to help relieve stress. Lavender has an extremely calming scent that will help you feel more relaxed by simply taking a whiff. Another great tip for lavender oil is after a long day, add a few drops to your shower. When the oil meets the steam, it will give off a pleasant and soothing aroma that is sure to make you feel at ease. You will leave your shower feeling like you just left the spa.

Cramps

It's that time of the month again and your cramps are relentless. When medicine and chocolate aren't working, try Clary Sage oil. This magical oil helps to naturally balance your body's hormones making your cramps subside. This oil is best used topically on the skin. Massage 2-3 drops on your lower abdomen in combination with a warm compress. This will help to drastically relive your symptoms. Warning: Do not go out in the sun after applying essential oils due to skin sensitivity.

Sleep

Essential oils have been a natural remedy for insomnia and sleep issues for years. This is where an oil diffuser really comes in handy. Add a few drops of lavender and bergamot to your diffuser and set it to run for about 30-40 minutes as you're falling asleep. These oils are naturally rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, which are known for their relaxing properties. Lay down, close your eyes and let your diffuser work its magic.

Cleaning

Essential oils are a great way to clean your house naturally. Use Tee Tree Oil because it has natural antiseptic and antifungal properties. All you have to do is mix vinegar, water, natural soap and tea tree oil to create an effective cleaner that works on multiple surfaces. People have also added tea tree oil to their diffuser to, "clean the air," for a healthy bacteria-free environment.

Cold and Flu

You're sneezing, shivering and congested looking for some relief. There are many great natural remedies for the common cold, but essential oils work like a charm. Frankincense oil is great to help with cold and flu symptoms. Believe it or not, this essential oil has natural cold fighting properties. It is anti-septic and anti-inflammatory. Try adding a few drops to a warm bath to help with your body's aches and pains. Also try steam inhalation with frankincense to help relieve your congestion.

By using specific essential oils daily, you can actually enhance your mood and productivity. Smell is a powerful sense and has many effects on our brain. Keeping lemon essential oil diffusing throughout the day can help you stay focused and energized. Lemon has many clarifying properties that help clear the mind.
