An A-Line Is Always a Classic

The most traditional bridal silhouette, this style follows in the famous footsteps of some real-life princesses.

The A-line style is the most basic and classic silhouette, but don’t discount it! Just think of what the letter A looks like and you can picture this dress in your mind’s eye. Fitted through the bodice, the dress hits at the natural waistline and then gently flares out. There’s also really pretty movement in the skirt and that’s what creates the shape of an A off the body. It’s ideal for any bride who wants to play up her waistline without being overly body conscious.

“The amazing thing about an A-line is that it’s my go-to starter dress for the bride who comes in and has no idea what style she wants,” says Liz Cox, manager and media director at Twirl, A Bridal Boutique. “Since it can fall right in the middle between super fitted and a larger ball gown style, it’s a great place to start. I have yet to see an A-line that doesn’t look good on someone. Plus it has a regal look; you’ll notice it’s a favored silhouette for royal weddings.”

Most recently this shape has been evolving. According to Cox, they’re seeing a spin on the classic look and the materials being used are complementing the shape of the dress. She’s seeing an updated, modern lace that offers a little bit of an edge to a less traditional bride. There’s also been more of a mixture of materials, added accents like bows, and horsehair style skirts. As for the neckline, Cox says you can’t ever go wrong with a sweetheart, it always flatters; the A-line also works well with a V-neck.
